The life and times of the KMP’s current oldest male, Palestrina (VLM211) is highlighted in this month’s Meerkatter. During the course of his life, beloved Palestrina has been dominant male at Zulus, Elrond’s Council and Alba.

The KMP meerkat observers are often rewarded with captivating, entertaining and even comical meerkat events during their routine group visits. But there are also the heartbreaking sightings that are part of meerkats’ natural world. Dramatic witnessed accounts of pup deaths in Dik-Diks and Vetkoeks are recounted in the March Meerkatter.

Pucky (VECM023) has taken the position of dominant male in Alba after half of the eligible males, including Palestrina, submitted to him.

Female dominance at Trackie-Daks is settled with Boubou (VTDF028) taking on that position following a direct submission from the group’s only other eligible female, littermate Chinchilla (VTDF029).  Trackie-Daks three-legged adult subordinate male Moon Moon (VTSM022) was given his LAST SEEN this month. He was seen two months ago close to Vetkoeks.

Elrond’s Council adult subordinate female Mojo Jojo (VECF038) is recovering well from a serious snake bite injury to her head that occurred in January.

Jaxx former dominant male Leonard (VLM221) lost his dominance when he did not wake up with the group on March 17.  It is probable that the current dominant female Jub Jub (VJXF160) is his daughter and therefore unlikely that he would mate with her. Leonard’s former partner (and Jub Jub’s mother), adult subordinate Baloo (VJXF080), remains with Jaxx along with her two remaining pups that were born in February.

Nightwatch is now an official KMP group after staying together for two months.

Adult male Sushi (VTSM006) has visible submandibular TB lumps.  Make-e-Plan is now a disintegrated group.  Of the remaining two members, juvenile female Adonalsium (VMPF092) immigrated into Nightwatch and dominant female Vin (VMPF09)1 was given her LAST SEEN on March 13.

Male and female dominance remains unsettled at Whiskers.  Yearling subordinate females Gnoll (VWF262) and Bruce (VWF266) gave birth this month, but their litters were abandoned.

Breeding season is in full swing. Not only are dominant females pregnant and having litters, but the subordinate females are as well. The impact of these pregnancies and litters are explained in the February Meerkatter.

Palestrina (VLM211) has surrendered his position as Alba dominant male following the death of his dominant partner Tolkien (VECF019) in January. Adult subordinate male Pucky (VECM023) and Charlie (VECM031) are currently competing for this vacant position. Cleopatra (VALF008) is Alba’s new dominant female.

Trackie-Daks Coquillette (VTSM014) is also displaying behavior that may indicate his move toward relinquishing his position as dominant male. His former dominant partner Fly (VWF237) died in December 2023 and he is likely the father of the group’s two remaining females.

Male dominance is still unconfirmed at Elrond’s Council. Dominant female Snoop Kat (VECF039) gave birth and four pups have emerged.

Make-e-Plan is likely abandoned. The majority of the group’s individuals immigrated into Gold Diggers 4. Only dominant female Vin (VMPF091) and juvenile Adonalsium (VMPF092) remained but have not been seen since mid-February.

Cape Crusaders dominant female Sky’s (VSIF003) remains were found between February 9 and 12. She was likely predated.

Female and male dominance at Whiskers remains unsettled. Yearling subordinate females Archangel (VWF259) and Candy Land’s (VWF256) litters were lost before emergence.

Hakuna Matata is now considered abandoned as they have not been seen since the end of 2022.

With the recent predation losses of Cape Crusaders dominant female Timon (VZUF049), Jaxx and Lazuli adult subordinate males Cigarette Smoking Man (VJXM153) and Beatrice (VGDM014), and Trackie-Daks former dominant female Fly (VWF237), an insightful and relevant article on meerkat predators, predation, and alarm calls, is presented in this month’s Meerkatter.

The group, Make-e-Plan, is highlighted in the January Merkatter as well. Its dominant female, Bridget (VQLF011), the oldest meerkat in the KMP’s current population and the last Quintessentials meerkat, went missing on January 6th.  Following an IGI with Gold Diggers and a group split resulting in the formation of a new group, Gold Diggers 4, Make-e-Plan is down to just 8 individuals.

There continues to be a handful of groups where dominance is still unknown or unsettled. Cape Crusaders and Elrond’s Council are still without a known dominant male. Trackie-Daks, Jaxx and Whiskers have no clear dominant female.  Previously absent Jaxx former dominant female Baloo (VJXF080) woke up with the group on January 11th.  Whiskers former dominant female Luna (VWF235)                                                                      was given her LAST SEEN.

Zulus finally has a new dominant male, with Gold Diggers Baymax (VGDM028) taking this position. Juliet (VGDF001) is Dik-Diks new dominant female.

Brussels Sprout’s dominant female Arabella (VMPF035) gave birth with one pup emerging.  This little group of five could use all the help they can get.

Alba’s adult subordinate female Tuktuk (VALF001) was given her LAST SEEN this month.  TukTuk was the first named Alba member when she was a pup. Alba’s dominant female Tolkien (VECF019) was bitten by a snake on January 25th and is still missing at the end of the month.

December 2023 Life History File

Gold Diggers rovers and their quests for male dominance in 2023 are highlighted in the December Meerkatter.  These boys include Baymax, (VGDM028), James (VGDM011), and brothers Beatrice (VGDM014) and Rogelio de la Vega (VGDM015).

The Whiskers endured many changes in 2023. A detailed review and update of this beloved group is also presented in this month’s Meerkatter. With the immigration of several wild males, Whiskers group status went from ‘Full Data Collection’ to ‘Habituation’. With Zuma’s (VZUM059) exit from the group in mid-November, male dominance is currently undetermined.  Prior dominant male Brea (VLM157) was officially given his LAST SEEN this month. Female dominance is unsettled with the disappearance of dominant female Luna (VWF235) mid-month.

Female dominance also remains unsettled at Jaxx.  While former dominant female Baloo (VJXF080) has fully recovered from her snake bite injuries, she has not been accepted back into the group. Loyal dominant male Leonard (VLM221) has been seen with Baloo on several occasions during the month.

Zulus dominant female (VZUF028) gave birth mid-December, but her litter was lost before emergence. Adult subordinate female Helga (VZUF052) was observed committing infanticide with one of the pups.

Trackie-Daks dominant female Fly’s (VWF237) most recent litter of four emerged. Sadly, Fly was found predated on December 30th, leaving the group without a dominant female.
